Blastbeats

I belive that almost everyone in here would agree with me on the statement that drummers are the ones who rule...
Favourite drummers: (in no particular order)
Tomas Haake.
Brann Dailor (check out Mastodon - Remission).
Chris Pennie.
Tony Laureano (now a part of Nile).
David Sandström (ex member of Refused (R.I.P.)).
Morgan Åström (on Sol Niger Within. Excellent!!!).
This list can change from day to day, but it´s a pretty neat list.

Nope. Do you listen to Cryptopsy? I mean REALLY listen to them? Are you a fan? The Drums are not triggered. I've watched Flo Play live from the stage twice and he does not use triggers.
What he does use is a sampler, which he uses for the "Do you hear that? That is the sound of inevitability." Among others.
So Almgren, plese link me to that interview, I'd really like to see it.

don't care about if he triggers or not, but the drum sound isn't the best. you can call that "futuristic" or whatever, but it just sounds sterile. and actually most death metal drummers use triggers!!!!!

how do you come to think that i'm a "hardcore kid"? i'm listening to metal for almost a decade now, death metal KID! and i guess i knoe more bout METAL than YOU. even a deaf could hear that the drums on AND THEN YOU'LL BEG are triggered. i'm very well able to differentiate between triggered and authentic drummming.

Actually Flo does use triggers, but so do most metal drummers and it's not any less "authentic", they are still hitting their drums. And as far as death metal goes, there is no better drummer. If you say there is better then enlighten me. I would love to hear someone who could actually surpass flo's mix of brutality and jazzy improvisation. Please tell me who is wayyyyy better! I challenge you!

wouldn't say that he's the "king" of extreme metal drumming, other death metal drummers like tony laureano or the guy in origin are just as good as flo.
you should look a bit further before you call anybody a "king".
there are lots of great drummers out there, and the only extreme metal drummer I can't "follow" is BRANN DAILOR(now in MASTODON,former member of LETHARGY and TODAY IS THE DAY) his drumming on LIFESBLOOD is unbelievable. he plays as if he had four hands. there's this song called WE BUILT THIS COME DEATH were he plays at inhuman speed. too much to believe!

I know what you mean, Krisiun kicks ass but there are like maybe 3-4 drum beats used and that about it, either a basic bass/snare beat, blast beat (but with fast double bass), and then as drum roll going like 500 bpm  .

Fuck all those grind bands with their one footed blasts
A lot of bands now a days use two footed blast beats. One footed blast beats are more old school (like carcass, etc). I love both but the one foot blast beat seems more natural. Dude, you ever listen to rotten sound? Their drummer is awesome at blast beats, I think he does the double bass blast beats, he is pretty sick at blasts. http://www.rottensound.com/ Flo is pretty fucking fast too. Those one-footed blasts are insanely difficult compared to the double bass version, at least for me. I mean if you play it like:
H-H-H-H-H-H-H-H-
S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-
-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B
Although I am not good at either one. It feels kinda difficult because the BD hits are off-beat. Sorry, I know this is off-topic :P

I find those more difficult to do as well, although I am getting better at them. With the double bass blast beats you just have to keep a slower beat since your using two feet as oppossed to one but with the single foot blast beat you have to play on that one foot much faster, so it can feel weird at times. To get used to it I keep the left foot off of my bass drum pedal so it is like I am playing double bass but only one bass drum is being played, the other just tapping the floor. Or you can practice the basic bass drum/snare beat
(H=high hat, S=snare, B=Bass drum)
---H----H--
---S----S--
-B----B----
at different tempos, since that's all a blast beat is, it's that beat but sped up. I am a guitarist not a drummer so I may sound like a dumbass in this field. I use the ride cymbal more for blast beats than the high hats though.

Are you guys seriously trying to say that single kick is harder than double kick? I could do a one-footed blast, and I'm not even a drummer.
meshman
11-03-2002, 04:19 PM
Nevermind, I know what you're saying about the kick being on the upbeat---but most grind bands do a roll with their hands on the snare and the high-hat and the kik is on the downbeat and the result is pretty much the same. It sounds like you guys are making something simple really difficult when it doesn't have to be.

I am not much of a drummer so for me it is not the easiest, but I find it much easier to do the blast with double bass, but that's just me. I can pull it off with a single foot but for me the double bass is easier, that's all I meant, althought the single does sound more natural. The single blast beat just requires more stamina, that's why I find the double bass blast beats easier to do, because I am a lazy mofo. :D

recently, GENE HOGLAN made fun of some scandinavian black metal bands.(DARK FUNERAL,EMPEROR and IMMORTAL) he stated that those black metal drummers all use PRO-TOOLS to speed up their drumming......
I saw Immortal live about six months ago, and Horgh is just as fast live as he is on the albums, so no. I think Gene may a little bit on the jealous side. :D
Oh, and favorite drummers (off the top of my head):
Tomas Haake - so awesome... everywhere
Morgen Ågren
Virgil Donati
Billy Cobham
Elvin Jones
Henry Ranta
Danny Carey - so awesome live
Pete "the feet" Sandoval
Horgh
Alfredo Hernández
Paul Bostaph
Ken Owen
John Stanier
Jan Axel Von Blomberg (aka Hellhammer)

I am glad someone picked Ken Owen, he fucking rules. I was just watching the carcass dvd yesterday, that's one band that need to have a reunion, well if Ken was not in his situation and if Bill Steer actually liked grindcore again.

Well, Bill's got Firebird, and from what I hear, Ken is interested in getting back into music - although of an electronic variety for now. I don't know if you'd heard, but Ken got out of his coma early this year.
And to Wangoed - I'm not really sure if that's Hellhammer's real name, but he has used it on a few albums, and I have seen it online listed as his real name, so my sources point to yes.

Whoa, that last post got sucked into a vortex! Page 7 of 6? That's bizarre. Maybe this post will knock this thread back into alignment.
In order to give this post a bit of relevance, I did some more research on Hellhammer by checking the All Music Guide and thumbing through my copy of Lords of Chaos, and it does indeed seem his name is at least Jan Axel Blomberg. The "Von" is included on a few albums (Arcturus' more recent efforts), and he's referenced as Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg in Lords of Chaos.
Then again, I suppose both of those aren't the best of resources, but as far as I know, Lords of Chaos is the most definitive book on the Black Metal scene of the 90's. Of course, their Norsk could be better... they thought "før" was "for" and not "before". :P

Flo Monier and jazz improvisation in the same sentence  Mike Mangini could do anything Flo does and he could do it twice as fast (I'm not kidding)and 4x more fucked up. His single hand rolls are absolutely horrifying. He also holds the worlds record for most beats played in 60 seconds with his hands (1,167 if I remember correctly, can someone verify?). Needless to say, if he ever joined a death metal band he would have everyone grabbing their dicks because death heads always piss themselves over how fast the drummers are.
my favorite drummers...
1. gary husband
2. morgan agren
I recognize Virgil and Mike Mangini's godliness but the things they do on a drum kit are light years beyond my understanding. Those guys are from another world. I am not even worthy of listing them as favorites.
Tsorovan
12-04-2002, 06:23 AM
I've never heard a song on which Mangini plays that showcased any technique at all. To me, he seems like a standard player in the "bands" he's in, and then he'll go nuts in solos. Mindless solos too, if I might add. Non-musical solos. Check out Wackerman's solo on "Zone" on Holdsworth's newest live album, All Night Wrong if you want a musical solo.
In other news...I recently saw Bill Frisell Quartet. Amazing concert, plus...the drummer; Kenny something...awesome player. He boggled my mind. No tech flaunt...just incredible dynamics and outstanding feeling/control.
Rob_Wolfe
12-04-2002, 08:41 AM
Yes definitely mindless. Just fast, crazy-all over the place and wacked rhythms. I understand what you mean. Planet X is not something I enjoy, but listening to Virgil solo by himself can hold my attention for a long time. Dynamics and such aren't important to me when there is so much going on rhythmically.

Tsorovan,
The name of the drummer you saw with Frisell is Kenny Wollesen (resident of NYC, by way of Northern California), one of the mainstays of the so-called "downtown" scene in New York for the past 12 years or so. In addition to Frisell's band, he does quite a bit of work with John Zorn, among many others.
Another drummer from the NYC scene that you would probably like is Jim Black. He has two albums under his own name--you should check him out if you haven't heard him already.
There are a number of drummers here in the States that are going to be very influential worldwide in the future, but they are just starting to become well-known at this point.
The drummers I'm thinking of are: Dave King (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Elliot Kavee (NYC), and Dan Weiss (New Jersey).
These guys are all ridiculous, technically and polyrhythmically--they are basically similar to Morgen Agren, in that they are not well known, but anybody who has heard them is left in a state of shock and amazement. I have no problems stating that they are as advanced as any drummer that has been mentioned on this list, each in his own individual way.
Anybody who is interested in high-level creative drumming should make an effort to hear these guys--all of them have recorded in a variety of contexts, and they tour frequently in Europe and the States.

Yeah, he won the title "Worlds Fastest Hands".. He even got a belt that looked like something out of Pro wrestling. He is a incredible drummer, he can sit down with anybody and play, and when its time to solo, he blast out.
The fella Tsoro mentioned, Chad Wackerman.. He is inspiring to say the least. His Holdsworth stuff is amazing, totally, and his more recent stuff (Rick Ruby, solo) is incredible. He's not just a super fast player, but he's right next to say "Vinnie C., Weckl, Chambers ect" when it comes to drumming that is inspiring, intuitively musical, creative and innovative. He's no clone, that's for sure.
Wisdom, I've heard of Jim Black and Dan Weiss.. I got some sounds off AIM a few months ago of Jim. B and was quite impressed, or rather really enjoyed. I read a write-up on Dan on the Modern Drummer site not to long ago, haven't heard him play though. If you know of any websites, please post!

Here are some URL's re: the drummers I mentioned above:
Dave King- www.daveking.org
Dave is involved in many different projects, ranging from rock to more improvisational-type "jazz" groups. All of them are on an extremely high level--I would suggest starting out with the groups Happy Apple (improvisational, but with rock elements), 12rods (rock), and Love-Cars (rock).
Elliot Kavee- www.elliothumbertokavee.com
I would recommend checking Elliot out in the group Fieldwork, and in saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa's group. He's a scary dude on those drums.
I don't think Dan Weiss has a website at this point, but you should just try to pick up any recent album with him on it--he's playing great these days.

Well, I just put him onto some players that he wasn't familar with.
Dave King has gone on to become much better known internationally since I wrote that post (three years ago...time flies), due to the wild success of The Bad Plus.
Some younger drummers who have come along more recently that I recommend highly: Tyshawn Sorey, Joe Tomino, Ron Bruner Jr., and Antonio Sanchez (he's also becoming well known, as a result of his work with the Pat Metheny Group). If any of these guys are playing in your town, you should definitely go and check them out.

i was thinking about signing up for Drum Off 2005. then i looked at the other drummers' influences. most common? joey jordison. figures. i like to ask the audience before i play shows "who thinks speed is a good substitute for talent? let me rephrase that, how many joey jordison fans we got out there tonight?" lots of hands go up. yes i'm sure joey is god....but of what? as we've seen from the noise or rather the music industry, anyone can be fast. sure tim watterson is fast, but when all you do it blast beats and speed rolls you will get good at it. i haven't heard a lot of dimmu borgir, but i haven't heard any song from them with anything but blast beats.
i'd like to say my favorite drummer is grant collins. this guy does things with a double pedal joey jo jo can't dream of doing. so speed is out. my question is what can jordison do that collins can't? i also like vinnie c. good man.
