View Full Version : Best vocalist ever?

In rock I have to say the best ever is David Gilmour

Isn't that the guy that used to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL? Or was his name Doug? Hmm...

Best Vocalist? In what respect?
Apache Boy
04-13-2003, 11:46 PM
Singing, not growling, and he played lead guitar for pink floyd and was a main vocalist
Barry Clark

I know who he was. I like his voice but I can think of vocalists who are more techinically adept.

Dave Gilmour? You serious? I mean I like a lot of his stuff but he's a guitarist primarily. I can think of 500 better vocallists than him.
Apache Boy man, you're digging yourself very deep holes around these parts and you're not coming out with much credibility. In fact you're looking like a fool.

I partially agree. Pink Floyd is a very well known group, and that means that a lot of "posers" bring them up as the most innovative, creative or whatever musicians ever. But they're not.
They're good, but not THAT good.

And Gilmour's vocals have nothing to do with if Floyd was good or not.
Sly Morrison
04-16-2003, 08:14 PM
I think Gilmour has a very well rounded rock voice, he can get rough with his voice or lull with his deep voice, but Jim Morrison had a pretty good voice, although he was out-of-tune some times, but he did have one great yell. And I don't know if he counts as rock, but Sly Stone had one sweet voice.

The problem I have with Pink Floyd is that they were all public schoolboys who through no fault of their own after being handed much of life on a plate, lacked real passion to create music which said something or released some kind of energy.
The early stuff once Syd left was drugged up bollocks mainly, and it was only the talent of Waters as a song writer which saw them gain the status we know today. Nick Mason was in the right place at the right time - he could never drum that well, just look at the post Waters era to see how he had to use a decent drummer in live performances whilst he raked in the cash and took a back seat.
Waters was lucky to have Gilmour as a guitarist to complement his music, but posh boy Gilmour was no songwriter himself.
Pink Floyd was the Roger Waters band of the 70s. He eventually lost it and so did they once he left. Their best album was Animals
Sly Morrison
04-17-2003, 01:59 PM
Animals was a great album, my favorite has to be Wish You Were Here or Meddle though, the Wall and Dark Side were amazing, and I have a spot in my heart for the Division Bell and A Saucerful of Secrets

I love Pink Floyd, but sort of burned out on them. I remember arguing with a friend after he told me he thought nick mason was THE best drummer ever. I suppose he thought that Mason was the most tasteful in where he put his drum fills and such, or the most musical. I told him he's full of shit, that there aare a million drummers better than he. but to each his own opinion.

I don't like Devin either, but I'll tell you who really pisses me off: Mike Patton. I absolutely hate him. His voice grates on my ears more than anyone else I've ever heard. He single-handedly ruined Dillinger's latest EP. I don't know what they were thinking when they got him to do vocals. But anyway, I like George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher the best when it comes to metal. Though Dimitri from (ex) Dillinger Escape Plan was insane, and JR Hayes from Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed kicks ass, too. Plus, I really think Mieszko (spelling?) from Nasum is first rate. Then there' Frank Mullen. There are several good metal vocalists out there.
No offense man but how could you like guys that simply grunt & moan on microphone & dislike guys like Devin & Mike who actually have great voices? I mean thats like saying oh wow I got Thomas from Mesh to do the session druming on my bands new album. No wait hes too good, lets go get that good charlotte guy.

I use to like that sreamo shit too like pig destroyer, nasum, etc., but i dont feel enough emotion in any of there songs. Theres like 32 songs on there albums, with the longest song running by at like a min. and a half and they dont put enough time into the tracks, where devin will do demo after demo of one song until its just they way he likes it. Plus his lyrics have meaning, unlike lyrics that revolve around grinding up cheerleaders and using there intestins as pom poms. It seems that bands such as pig destroyer will do one take of a song in the studio and however it comes out, shity or just plain ok ,they just throw it on the cd, at least thats how it sounds to me. i respect your choice of music man but i think mike patton is the best thing that could have came out of dillenger. :|

There's no emotion in their songs? How do you figure? There's just as much emotion in there as Mesh puts into their songs. I can respect the fact that you don't favor short songs, but whether a band divides a CD into many tracks with few riffs, or few tracks with a lot of riffs, you're getting the same amount of material. Maybe you just don't like grind, which is fine, but I really dig the sub-one minute songs.
It seems that bands such as pig destroyer will do one take of a song in the studio and however it comes out, shity or just plain ok ,they just throw it on the cd, at least thats how it sounds to me.
That's just how it sounds to you. It makes me angry for you to insinuate that Pig Destroyer and Nasum don't put enough time into their songs, because they're two of my favorite bands, and I think they stomp all over anything Devin has ever done. Prowler in the Yard is one of the best albums in the entire history of metal. I'm sorry, I just don't see what the big damn deal is about Devin.
Plus his lyrics have meaning, unlike lyrics that revolve around grinding up cheerleaders and using there intestins as pom poms.
It's very clear to me that you have never listened to Nasum or Pig Destroyer, or else you would know that neither of them write any gore lyrics (which there is absolutely nothing wrong with). JR Hayes writes much more interseting lyrics than Devin could ever dream of. Nasum is also quite political, so it was just downright retarded of you to say that their lyrics have no meaning. I have SYL's album City, and that's as far as I decided I was going to go with Devin. It's one of the shittiest albums I've ever heard. I hope you were referring to something else when you wrote about his meaningful lyrics.
i think mike patton is the best thing that could have came out of dillenger
Did you actually get a chance to hear the EP? It was awful. A couple of the tracks were good, but Patton's vocals make them absolutely unlistenable. The EP is not just a step backward from Dillinger's previous material, it's about 8 steps backward. Until they redeem themselves, they are simply an average metal band.
Like I said listen to those songs I mentioned. Theres more than just screams there. Listen to Depth Charge, real molodicies with screams. Plus unlike Corpse, he plays guitar do & is damn good at it while he sings.

I'm really not into metal that mixes clean vocals and screams/growls. That's for hardcore, if you ask me. Jack and Pat from Cannibal Corpse are damn fine guitar players, though (even if they can't write a solo to save their life).

Significant growth and maturation have since made this post irrelevant.

I dont know man but I just cant take non stop growling. I like alittle meolidicy in my vocals. Thats why I love Mikael Akerfelt's vocals so much, same with Devins.

pssshhh. Clean vocals aren't for metal.
prrhuwwhWHAT?!?!?!? Jesus Christ man! I know, you'll hate me for this (probably like 99% of the bloody forum - and they can all go to hell): What about Judas Priest? What about Iron Maiden? Hell, what about Candlemass? What about hundreds of other great bands?
Thinking about it, Rob Halford has got to be one of my favorite singers.

No one has mentioned Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnaes (Dimmu Borgir, ex-Borknagar) I think he is a great vocalist, with an original voice + good technique and range.
Other than that I agree with earlier posts that these guys are also great:
Mike Patton
Layne Staley
Chris Cornell
Mikael Åkerfeldt
Ihsahn (Vegard Sverre Tveitan)
Chino Moreno
Maynard James Keenan

Here's my fuckin' list - no bitching:
Mike Patton
Maynard Keenan
Freddie Mercury
Mikael Akerfeldt
Bjork
Thats all I can really think of at the moment.
All that nonsence abot Pink Floyd earlier on - they were fucking innovative goddamit! Give em' some respect - Roger Waters was a genius!
