View Full Version : Bassplayers should not use plectrum...

Let me first say that the bass in Contradictions collapse sounds great! He probably uses a plectrum to get that sound.
But why!? Oh, Whyy do bassplayers use a pick.. I don't know about you guys, but I think it sux! There are limitations when you use a pick/plectrum. If you really want to be a good bassplayer, use 3 (fingers) instead of 1 (pick) thingy. Then you can play more difficult and more fun shit!
Right?

I play with my fingers..but god..I'd for sure use a pick for Meshuggah..you'd get so tired..so fast..

Yeah right...you try laying down the bass tracks for 'The Mouth Licking What You've Bled', or the first part of 'Corridor of Chameleons' with your fingers instead of a pick. That is sooo not gonna happen!
Maybe if Jaco Pastorius was still alive, and he had a bionic right hand...otherwise, fuggedaboutit!

Hehe, that's true :) But still.. They don't play extremely fast (except War ;)), they play weird-ass "time-changes"

Hmm.. what can I say: Pratice :) hehe.
John Myung plays the same shit as the guitarsolos. THAT'S speed!

There would also be a problem with the attack--it wouldn't be as sharp and percussive if you used your fingers.

Because I still don't think bassplayers should play with picks. And this is a forum right? :P Made for discussions

U have acertain point dude, i play a 4 string bass using my fingers, believe me it sounds better like this, but u most know that with a plec u can play a lot faster, it sounds a little worst but, u play faster, for those who just got started with the bass, use your fingers.

I so totally agree that it sounds better. But the more you play, the longer you can play without getting cramps or 'Spasm's ;)
And I still think that it is easier with fingers

Well, its simple, if u wanna do crazy fast shit, u better use a plec, otherwise, u'll probably cant do it, finger use is best used if u really know ow to use them, believe me that a bass newby would play better with a plec, but with a plec, u'll never become a real good bass player. :metal:

I can appreciate that you like the sound of fingers better, but the idea that it 'sounds better' in some absolute sense doesn't fly.
Doug Wimbish uses a pick as well as several different types of fingerstrokes during a live gig or recording session--each technique produces its own unique sound, and each one of them is useful in certain situations.
There is no 'better' sound (except in your personal opinion)--it depends on what the music calls for.
Anyway, the question is academic--I don't think that it would be very likely that you could achieve the kind of accuracy and consistency of attack that Meshuggah's music requires using your fingers.
A bassist who could pull that kind of thing off would probably rather be playing in a fusion band anyway.
Somehow, I just don't see Jimmy Johnson or John Pattitucci being interested in the gig.

I agree with u, its true that tecniks get diferent sounds, fingering is most dificult than pleking, i used to plec myself, but now i dont think i could continue, with it. Although the plec gives a harder sound, the fingers give a groovier sound. U play bass?

..playing bass with fingers sounds better to me, sounds more percussive, which i like; for a great sound example of playing all five strings of the bass with fingers check out the Gorguts guitar.com video.. ..The bassist is amazing..

playing bass with a pick is just another way to get a sound out. It creates a completely different sound than fingers. So, in my eyes, it is just as legit as playing guitars with your fingers......or changing the plucking hand position from neck to bridge. There is no right or better way. THere are only ways. Anyone who tells you different is close minded and you likely wouldn't want to play with them.

Nah!! I use both techniques. When I play jazzy songs or clear parts I use my three fingers, but when I wanna get a stronger sound I use my pick. In fact, I use both techniques in a song sometimes. Other stuff: I play where I feel comfortably my bass. Use the bass under my face?? it sucks to me.

i play both ways, and enjoy both sounds' grain for different reasons.

I personally don't like the sound of a bass played by pick. Robs the instrument out of tone, percussiveness and fullness.
Usually the people who say it sounds better and more aggressive with a pick are the ones who couldn't play with fingers if their life depended on it :P
And you can actually play WAY faster with fingers than with a pick, once you get the technique down.

I see it as something different too. But I just don't like the sound.
Iäm not against pick players, I mean, I've seen people play with picks and smoke most fingerplayers when it comes to chucking out bass lines.
I personally just don't like the sound.

I don't really play bass guitar but doesn't it matter what texture you want in the song? For certain textures, you might wanna use your fingers and for other textures, you might wanna use a pick... Kinda like when I play guitar, for different textures I may use a different pickup position or even adjust the tone knob... It should be the same for bass... I think bass players should learn to be relatively good at playing with their fingers as well as a pick because different songs or parts may call for different textures or feel or mood... Shit, I play guitar but I taught myself to slap and pop on my seven string guitar! Why? Why not?! I was always into slap and pop style on the bass and my guitar strings are pretty thick so I taught myself how to do it on guitar... I can do it on a bass but like I said, I'm a guitar player with minor bass skills... The bottomline is that a bass player should at least know a bit of playing with their fingers, with a pick, with whatever! Just keep expanding and learning! Meshuggah wouldn't be Meshuggah if they didn't expand themselves... Going from a seven string to an eight string is a form of expansion, don't ya think... It doesn't make an eight string a BETTER instrument but it's something to use when you're going for a certain mood or texture or tone... Like what I said about the whole bass thing... It depends what you're going for... My 2 cents... And yeah, this does belong in the bass forum... but whatever... ;)

Yeah, I'm very careful never to say "oh, if you don't play like that you're not a REAL bass player" because there's always SOMEONE out there who plays that way and smokes you at playing.

I use picks only for playing metal but that's not a technical matter (the speed) it's a matter of sound !!!
fingers do not sound like picks , tapping or slap, left hand legato.....
the pîck sound is more punchy but with less bass frequencies than fingers !!!
it's like an instrumental effect !!

Bass players should play.
With the thumb slapping and the point finger going nuts with plucking the strings :D
That's funky and good.
If your playing with a plectrum it's not a bass anymore.
It's just a guitar an octave lower.
Thump and pluck or die
