just get the best sound from ur pod to record.....then, depending on ur recording softwear, adjust the eq frequencies each track at a different frequency from each other till u hear each track cutting threw......dont rely on just ur monitor speakers.....burn a cd then listen to it in ur car, on ur normal CD player, and whatever else.....make ur adjustment from what u hear on the CD......hope that helps.

for the kicks low end use 75 to 100 k.......for the mid highs use around 1000 to 1500 and go from there

the first thing you should do is cut out all of the frequencies that are beyond the spectrum of each instrument. This will clear things up in general. Then you should do what I call "carve" EQ holes---for example, cut the bass around 100 Hz and boost it around 80, then do the exact opposite to the kick. Then you can give each instrument it's own aural space. In general, for guitars I think it is always good to do some cutting around 5 kHz, but don't cut too much.

maybe not 'rules' but there are ways of making a recording sound better by knowing a bit about frequency ranges and the human perception of sound. good use of eq can make a drastic improvement in even a very basic home recording.
