Ok this topic I was going to post a poll but I think it better to just let you all just name to best screams off, out of the top of your heads. I would say(in no particular order)...
Hypocrisy-Rosewell 47
Faith no More-Cukoo for Caca
Carcass-No Love Lost
Meshuggah-futile breed machine
Tool-ticks and leeches
Stuck Mojo-Violated
SYL-The entire City, Heavy as & SYL albums
Devin Townsend-Deadhead
Now nowbody even think of posting Dani Filth in here.

• Maynard - Eulogy (24 or 28 seconds or something like that)
• Jens - New Millennium Cyanide Christ (03:59)
• A multitude of Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation) low-register "roars" in assorted songs. Too many to recall right now.

If distorted vocals are allowed:

Anaal Nathrakh - When Humanity Is Cancer

If not:

Looking For An Answer - Last song from the split with Kontraattaque

Those are the ones I could think of from the top of my head, I'm sure there are others worthy of mentioning.

Edit:

I'd also add the vocalist of Dropdead on their 2nd full-length CD

Definately Jens on NMCC, the second scream in particular. Really, nothing tops that.

Maynard also has a few good ones, although not very ferocious, to me, they sound good. One is in the Grudge, and another one is in Judith.

Phil Anselmo also has a good one in track no.8 on Great southern trendkill, right after the quiet bit. Although in general, I don't think Phil is a great screamer, this one in particular is quite vicious.

The only other person I feel comes close to jens in terms of powerful screams (we are talking screams here, not singing in general.....) is Max Cavelera, namely around the time he recorded the first soulfly album. Fuck, he absolutely roars, shit singer, but he can certainly roar like a beast.
There is one particular live version of tribe where he lets off a scream that would make an enraged gorilla cower in to the corner like a little sissy english boy.

The best scream to me is without doubt Mikael Åkerfeldt's in "The Leper Affinity" (The long one near the end of the song) from Opeth's "Blackwater Park". It's so powerful and intense. It sounds so surreal. Like it's not a human doing it. I really like that. I have no idea how that guy pull it off. And then he also sings with the sweetest melodic voice in some passages, switching from that to growl effortlessly. I really admire that guy.

Tsorovan:
I like Daniel Gildenlöw's low-register "roars" too. But they're not really screams to me. It's kind of like a light growl, but melodically sung, or something.

alphaWave

While I think Åkerfeldt has a great voice, his growls/screams never strike me as particularly aggressive. You can quite easily tell that he growls quietly, sort of (which he admits himself) and therefore trades in some of the power and bestiality for (my guess) more control over his voice and lower pitch. This is probably also how he manages to effortlessly switch from clean vocals to growls in a matter of seconds.

This is like a month late or something, but what the heck.

What I like about Åkerfeldt's growls is that it sounds so efforless. He have such control over the way his voice is shaped and it seems like he's totally relaxed while doing it. He also growls a lot more dynamic than any other growler I have heard. I don't know how loud he growls compared to other guys, but I definately prefer his growls over sounding like a gorilla on heat like a lot of guys, in my opinion, does. That just ruins the feeling for me. I like when it sounds more controlled.

But if you could give some good examples of growling that you prefer I'd really like to check them out.

Tapman, I don't think there are many growlers worth mentioning. Here are a few that come to mind:

- John Tardy, Obituary
- Kam Lee, Massacre
- Karl Willets, Bolt Thrower
- The guy from Corrupted (don't know his name)
- Erich Keller, Fear Of God

There are other vocalists I love, but they aren't exactly growlers, so I'll leave it at that.

The dude from Ion Dissonance has a very vast range of screams. I can't believe how high pitched he can get. As far as growls, nothing beats good old Corpse Grinder, IMO. Jens is the shite, but his vocals on Nothing left me unfulfilled---there were no "CHAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSS!!!"-styled breakdown screams and they were all pretty monotone.

I was just thinkin, when I clicked on the thread, Maynards scream near the end of Eulogy.

...and yeh Patton in Cuckoo for caca - sounds like a little kid without his toys or something. Its gold.

I also love Tomas from At The Gates's scream at the start of Under A Serpent Sun - It compliments that killer riff so much!

All those who have mentioned Maynard are forgetting the end of "Jerk Off": the "DIE!" scream. I get chills every time I hear that song. That's his most memorable scream in my book.

I'm also quite fond of Jens' "SUFFER IN TRUUUUUTH!" at the end of the song, right as the outro starts up.

Whether or not the song is good, I imagine we're talking about individual screams aside from the music itself. The scream I mentioned from Opiate is just a good, old-fashioned, blood-curdling scream. I imagine you could appreciate his vocal performance on its own merits. Or not. Oh well.

And, I'm forgetting which lyric this is from the song "Pushit", but, after the "I am somewhere I don't wanna be..." break, before the last heavy part that ends the song, he(I'm not sure if it's really a scream) "screams" either "I must persuade you another way" or "there's no love in fear", and he sustains it for a couple of seconds. I'm too lazy to figure out right now which line is correct(which is funny because I've heard the song many times), but I figure you know what I'm talking about, because it may be the best moment in that song. If I'm in the right mood, it gives me a certain type of chill I've never experienced from anything else in my life.

Towelhead, you can't go wrong with about any Zach scream. Personally, the one that gets me more jazzed, since it's in more of a monumental moment(for me, since the "Freedom" scream is in a pretty heavy emotional part of the song), is the "YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH!!!!!" scream at the end of "Fistful of Steel" on the same album. Of course, almost everything about that album is pure ownage.

funny thing is.. i always liked RATM, but they were more like some "anti-corporate band working for a corporation", you know... i liked them but didn't really respect them too much... i respected some bands that were more radical... nowadays i look back and RATM have more sense than those bands i respected more... they accomplished something, and those other bands just vanished... i guess most of their members fit into a system, while Zack is still trying to spred the message, despite all the money he earned

I always liked Rage for the funkiness of the man Morello's riffs and the energy that they brought forward with their music. Sounded like everything was true and from the heart(I thought it was, but maybe it wasn't?), and it added another level to my enjoyment of their music.

Yep. It was interesting that Maynard guested on Rage's debut album, and Tool was just getting started pretty much the same year(at least it was the year they released Opiate, their debut EP). It was also interesting that Adam Jones and Tom Morello went to the same high school and played together in a band. Interesting that two of the biggest and best hard rock bands of the last 15 years were getting started at the same time and were related in such a way. Maybe interesting only to me.

WORD. a friend of mine was the guitarplayer in her former band called mistress (no kidding...suits perfect to this cyber bitch from hell  ) and he showed me an older demo tape with her on vocals...her style was different compared to the current arch enemy stuff (I'm talking about anthems...)...no...those were growls from another realm....some truly deep crazy shit (mistress was a great death metal outfit from cologne by the way)! And I always thought otep was badass female shouting...VERY impressive...

answer to topic: What's the deal with single screams in songs...? My opinion is when a shouter has the balls (or in angela's case...BALLS) he'll do a good job on the whole song/record! If not then he just had a good day at the studio when it sounded intense...
Best shouting is achived at the limit of the vocalists very potential...example: Jens/none/humiliative: (HEAR ME I'M IGNOMINY) THERE'S NO RENAISSANCE IN
BLEEDING (he's having some trouble by now, followed by the wonderful moment of letting go:) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Perfect.

Dez Fafara had his moments...Mike Patton does some crazy shit...and if you like it those 2 blood brothers vocalists do a pretty cool job!

Another duo from hell are those hogs from raging speedhorn...yes indeed
