Some idiot says that Meshuggah has stuff in something other than 4/4. I know they do some stuff out of 4/4, but when somebody says The Mouth Licking What You've Bled is in 13/8 or some crap like that. . .body I just want to shoot them

who cares if people think meshuggah plays in 13/8 or 23/16 or anything like that, at least they're listening. when they mention something that's wrong you can correct them and be all "w3rd" about it. you dig?

But to my understanding, a polyrhythm is 2 rhythms played at the same time.
which for example, works in new millenium cyanide christ..
5 subdivided bars of 23/16 + 1 of 13/16 = 128.. 128 / 16 = 8 (8 bars of 4/4 or 16/16)
This is why Meshuggah is sometimes called "Math Metal", although im quite sure they dont sit there and revise high school text books

That used to be my understanding too, but someone here corrected me. So it's polyMETRICS instead. Polyrhythms are whatever, I don't remember.

A polyrhythm is a combination of rhythms with different temporal status. They're not magical, you don't have to fear them.
Here's a extremely brief outline of African (homogenized!) polyrhythmic drumming.
Here's a twelve count bar. If you know any music theory, these are quarter notes. If not, just count twelve beats in a bar.

You can try this with a group of friends. Bold means clap. It's important that all players accent on the one. This is how drum troupes (African, Cuban, Chinese etc.) keep it together, regardless of how off-beat the phrases may seem.

if ive gathered correctly so far.. a polymetric is NMCC, and a polyrhyhtm is Qualms of Reality?? (i may be wrong.. but thats the one with the acoustic intro isnt it?).... or is it the other way around?

Im not trying to offend anyone but stop fighting about the fucking times, The music still sounds the same if you know the times or not...just listen to the damn music and enjoy it, and meshuggah is easy to enjoy. :twisted: :)
